Vol State Update: update from poseidon's perch - by Carl Laniak via ULTRAlist on July 17th, 2012
We are at castle rock ranch, awaiting the #2 runner.
But...
The sky is coming apart. This storm is more than laz or I have ever been in, from a volume of rain standpoint. It's raining more than a hurricane. Just incredible.
Josh and Paul have both retreated to their crew vehicles, but juli is up on the monteagle plateau with just the poncho in her pack. She is experiencing.... something... up there right now.

Comment at 10.36 p.m. local time:
I used to head to the shore for hurricanes and this is still one of the worst storms I have experienced (albeit mostly from my car except to meet my runner and fix what he needs). Check out the radar for Jasper, TN. It bloomed out of nowhere.
Paul is running. Sat in car long enough to clean glasses and change batteries in flashlight. Town's without power are very dark...

Joshua got in his crew vehicle when a limb blew down out of a tree and hit him, while a lightning bolt struck within spitting distance.
But Paul is apparently running on thru this storm. Gaining.
With the amount of rain coming down, he *might* even have most of the stink washed off of him.
This hellacious bit of weather just might have a huge impact on the race...if it keeps up long enough for Paul to make up 6 more miles....

Comment of Rich Limacher at 2.45 p.m. local time:
Yeowza!!
Holey Fah-reeeking Moley! Congratulations and All Hail to King Dan-the-Man!!!!
Short may he suffer!
Long may he reign!!
Come back next year
and re-reign? A-gain?
He broke his own record! And as Carl duly noted: Dan is the First "Unscrewed" King!!!
Wow.
Congrats all over the place!
Makes me wanna suggest that he patent unscrewing.
I could possibly change all the lids on my jars to hammer-and-nail. Ya think?
Oh!
ONE MORE AMAZING THING TODAY!
Today is Dusty Hardman's Birthday! Yesssss!!!!
Let's maybe all wish her a "happy," eh? Ya also think?
She's "out there" right now, making it from Lewisburg to Shelbyville and…beyond. (?) Hopefully. She could surprise everyone and make it even to Manchester??!!!
Anyway, I did already wish her a H-Bday off-line, and ever so recently contribute to her charity. [It's on Facebook. I'll provide details later--clearly marked "NUC" so that, when you see it and don't wanna even consider helping her out charitably (moneywise)--which you may then read or delete as you choose.]
However, the Limericker Taxi Service has in the meantime coughed up with a "poem" to celebrate:
There was a sweet Vol-Stater named Dusty
Who, footed with her tennies so trusty,
With her indomitable will
Crested every single hill
And shucked everything off that was crusty!
Happy Birthday to Dusty! Short may SHE slog!! ;-)
Yours troubly,
Rich Limacher
(who served as Dusty's crew at Barkley this year, and she--in her very first crack at it--made it farther than he EVER did!)

Vol State Update: best beer? - by Carl Laniak via ULTRAlist on July 17th, 2012
the debate can be put to rest.
at mile 300, dan fox slapped a $20 bill in laz's hand,
and said, "bring me a beer to the rock."
not sure what we'll get, but it'll be the undisputed best beer in
ultrarunning....
the one you down at the finish,
after winning the race.
king don's reign is into the final minutes.
